Abstract

Glycolipids (0.25 and 0.26%) and phospholipids (0.10 and 0.11%) were isolated from the total lipids of 2 cv. (Indaf I and Hamsa) of finger millet seeds. 2 glyceroglycolipids and 4 glycerophosphatides were further isolated from the glycolipids and phospholipids by column and preparative TLC. Monogalactosyl diglyceride (MGDG) and digalactosyl diglyceride (DGDG) were the major glycolipids, whereas phosphatidyl choline and phosphatidyl ethanolamine were the major glycerophosphatides, comprising 57.0 and 60.7 mole % of the total phospholipids in Indaf I and 18.9 and 16.9% in Hamsa resp. Oleic, linoleic and palmitic acids totalled 94-97% in all compounds though the proportions varied. The MGDG and DGDG from Indaf I contained more palmitic acid (30.4 and 29.4%) than did those from Hamsa (25.6 and 24.8%). The ratio of unsaturated to saturated fatty acids in the various phospholipids was 2.6-2.8 in Indaf I and 1.7-1.9 in Hamsa. D -Galactose was the sugar component of MGDG and DGDG.
