Abstract

Aflatoxin B1 was given to groups of 10 male weanling Wistar rats and 10 guineapigs in amounts equivalent to about 5% of the LD50 dose for each species for 5 days per week. An equal number of control animals of each species had 0.1 ml saline only. Blood samples were obtained at the end of the 4th week from guineapigs and after 6 weeks from rats. There was a fall in the Hb content, total red cell count and leucocyte count in the treated animals of both species. The effect of differential counts was of little physiological significance. The animals given the toxin also had anisocytosis and poikilocytosis and the blood clotting time was prolonged. The significance of the findings relative to the anaemic syndrome in rats and guineapigs is discussed.
