Additional Information: <p align="justify">Aldose reductase (EC 1.1.1.21; alditol:NADPH oxidoreductase) belong to the well-conserved aldo-keto reductase super family of enzymes in plants and animals. They are monomeric, cytosolic proteins that catalyze the NADPH dependent reduction of aldoses and other aldehydes to their corresponding alcohols. In plants ARD is induced in vegetative tissues in response to drought and stress. Since it has been strongly implicated in the development of the chronic complications of diabetes mellitus in animals, much effort has been devoted to understanding the structure and mechanism of this enzyme. The enzyme aldose reductase was partially purified and characterized from Rice bran. The reductase, a monomer had an average molecular weight of 34.5 kDa as determined by gel filtration on Biosep-2000 and SDS-PAGE. The enzyme was NADPH specific and reduced a broad range of substrates including aldoses, aliphatic aldehydes and aromatic aldehydes. Maximum activity was observed at pH-6.9 in sodium phosphate buffer using DL-glyceraldehyde as substrate. Even though the main physiological role of aldose reductase is not clear, it plays a major role as a key enzyme in the polyol pathway.</p>
