Abstract

An HPLC method was developed for the separation of organic acids in commercial samples of Garcinia cambogia (Malabar tamarind) extracts. HPLC using various concn. of H2SO4 (6-12mM) as the mobile phase was studied; 6mM H2SO4 was selected as the best concn. for separation of organic acids from tamarind extracts. The major organic acid in commercially available extracts of Garcinia cambogia was (-) hydroxycitric acid (HCA) present at 51-55% (w/w) of extracts. Tartaric, citric and malic acids were present in much smaller quantities. A flow rate of 1.0 ml/min under isocratic conditions was used for elution of HCA and detection was via UV at 210 nm. This method accurately determined HCA in Garcinia cambogia extracts at levels of 2-10 mug. Recoveries were in the range 98.42-100.5% and coeff. of variance were between 0.25 and 0.63% (n = 5). Therefore, it is suggested that this method is ideally suited for rapid routine analysis of commercial Garcinia camboiga extracts.
