Abstract

In an attempt to increase the storage life of seed potatoes, the max. gamma-ray dose for reversible inhibition of sprouting (3.5 krad of -6-0Co gamma-rays at a dose rate of 1.0 krad/min for 30-50 g wt. range) was combined with a postirradiation hormone treatment by dipping in a 500 ppm solution of methyl indolyl-3-acetate for 50 min. Effects of gamma-irradiation at the following developmental stages were investigated: (i) predormancy max. (at commencement of storage), (ii) pre-dormancy min. (after 3-4wk), (iii) dormancy (after 8-9wk), (iv) pre-sprouting min. (after 13-14wk) and (v) sprouting (after 15-16wk). To save the cost of refrigeration, the seed potatoes were stored at the lowest sprouting temp. (9 degree C), being drawn from the storage chamber at appropriate developmental stages for irradiation. The temp. was 21 degree C during irradiation and 17 degree C during the subsequent hormone treatment. Relevant data are tabulated and show that the post-irradiation hormone treatment resulted in an extension of storage life at stages (i), (ii), (iii) and (iv), the max. extension being obtained at stage (ii).
