Abstract

Poor rice diets (PRD) or diets where 50% of the cereal had been replaced by low cost balanced foods (LCBF) (consisting of 65% wheat, ragi or jowar flour, 25% groundnut or cottonseed flour, 10% bengal gram, and fortified with vitamins and Ca salts) were fed to groups of 8 21-day-old female rats for 4 wk. Wt. gains were significantly improved by 50% supplementation with LCBF, and when rice was completely replaced by LCBF growth rate increased still further. Similar results were obtained when using rice, kaffir corn or ragi as the poor basic diet, with growth rates of approximate equal to7-10 g/wk, compared with approximate equal to14-18 g/wk for 50% supplemented diets. Results are tabulated.
