Abstract

Yield (Y) and milling breakage (MB) of 4 rice varieties (S-1092, IR-8, Thaichung-65 and SR-26B) were investigated. To determine the effect of changes in moisture content during maturation, samples were harvested at 4-14 day intervals, and moisture content, Y and MB determined; tables of results are given. Y increased as moisture content decreased to approximate equal to17%; at lower moisture contents, Y declined. MB increased as moisture content fell below 19-21%; the long-grain variety SR-26B gave higher MB than the other varieties. To determine the effect of sun-drying (SD) samples were harvested at 9 am and 3 pm on the same day. Moisture content decreased by 3-5% during the day, but little change occurred in MB; cumulative drying over several days did, however, increase MB. To determine the effect of wetting by dew, some fields were covered with canvas between 6 pm and 8 am each day; MB of rice from uncovered fields was higher than that of rice protected from dew. Of approximate equal to23% increase in MB of rice due to SD and dew, 10.6% is thought to be due to SD, and approximate equal to12.9% due to dew.
