Abstract

Production of amyloglucosidase by Aspergillus niger CFTRI 1105 employing submerged and solid state fermentations (SSF) to calculate total investment, cost of production and profitability for a plant producing 9, 30 and 150 m-3 enzyme per annum was tried. The enzyme titre (in 1 l extract from 1 kg mouldy bran) obtained by SSF is 10x more than that obtained by submerged fermentation (11 culture filtrate). However, submerged fermentation broth can be concentrated to the level obtained by SSF but it involves additional cost. Consequently, amyloglucosidase production by SSF will be economical especially for higher capacity SSF plants. The return will be either negative or too low with submerged fermentation. Two hypothetical cases of SSF in which the assumed enzyme yield is 1/10 or 3/10 that when submerged fermentation broth is concentrated 10x were also examined to compare economics. For the system to be economic the product yield using SSF should be at least 3/10 that obtained using submerged fermentation unless very high capacity plant of 150 m-3 size is employed. For all other hypothetical cases, both the submerged and SSF processes give negative return unless the selling cost of the product is increased suitably.
