Abstract

Methods for detecting insect infestation in stored foods and food storage facilities are reviewed. The review begins by considering the overall problem of insect infestation, including 2 tables summarizing common insect pests of different food types and deleterious effects of insect infestation on food quality parameters. The following detection methods are then considered: visual inspection; a conventional sampling and sieving method; X-ray techniques; NMR and NIR techniques; ELISA methods; uric acid analysis; CO2 analysis; specific gravity method; extraction of insect fragments from grand food samples; and staining techniques. The final part of the review is concerned with in situ detection and monitoring methods for large storage facilities (such as grain silos and elevators) and food handling or processing establishments; the following methods are considered: acoustic sensors; pitfall, probe and pitfall cone traps; multiple funnel traps; sticky traps; attractant traps; baited traps; and pheromone traps.
