Additional Information: When the Industrial revolution started, Instrumentation and Control received considerable impetus. Various control strategies were explored to monitor process variables in industries to maximise yield. Presently known as Process Control, tremendous advances have been made in this field in the past few decades. With the advent of micro controllers, process control has been revolutionized. PID control has emerged as the single most popular choice for control of variables such as temperature, pH and dissolved oxygen. In this project, the working of one each of a temperature controller, pH controller and DO controller were studied in terms of their general description, technical details, working principle and external controls. The temperature controller was connected to a fermentor with water and the its working practically studied and parameter values noted. The latter part of the project consisted of an overview of biosensors in terms of their working principle, desirable characteristics and parameters affecting their performance. Based on this work, it was found that further improvements are possible in bioprocess instrumentation by interfacing the micro controllers to microprocessors and making the control programs more customized and interactive. Elements of Feedforward Control and Artificial Neural Networks could also be incorporated.
