Abstract

Rice bran is pelletized to improve percolation of solvent during oil extraction. Rice bran pellets desiccate and harden during storage. An equation (H- Ho = K(Mo-M)) is proposed, to relate radial breaking strength (H) of pellets to moisture content (M), where Ho = initial value of H, Mo = initial value of M and K is a constant. As pellets hardened, the amount of oil extracted in the first 20 min was reduced by approx. 2%. Hardening had, however, no significant effect on total oil extracted, which was only 0.2% lower, after a 140-min extraction period, in 4-day old pellets than in fresh pellets.
