Additional Information: In the present study attempts have been made to study the antibacterial and properties of the extracts from the fruit and bark of Dillenia indica for their possible use as food biopreservatives and to study their possible mode of action.The extracts from the bark and fruit rinds of Dillenia indica showed antibacterial activity against the two major foodborne pathogens Bacillus cereus andYersinia enterocolitica. However, the bark extract was found to be the most effective against growth of the two foodborne pathogens. Membrane expansion was observed in the liposomal vesicle and bacterial membranes in the presence of the fruit and bark extracts of Dillenia indica Free oxygen content in the solution increased with the increase of the concentrations of the fruit and bark extracts in Bacillus cereus and Yersinia enterocolitica. There was decrease in the protein synthesis of bacteria after treating with the fruit and the bark extracts. Agarose gel electrophoresis showed that the DNA intensity goes down in case of treatment with bark and the fruit extracts. Higher concentration of the extracts showed more damage to DNA. All had similar DNA band. DNA degradation progress as the time interval increased. The changes in the cell wall of the bacteria after treatments with the extracts could be seen clearly compared with the normal cells. Results showed that the extracts from the bark and fruit of Dillenia indica possess antibacterial activity against foodborne pathogens. This antibacterial activity may probably attribute to expansion of cell membrane, inhibition of metabolic activity and by degradation of nuclear materials.
